February 10, 2022 – Basemark, a provider of automotive software solutions for enterprise, has recently announced that it has implemented its augmented reality (AR) applications for the BMW Group, with the first one being its ‘AR over-video’ application, which is now available in some of the latest BMW vehicle models.
According to Basemark, its work has resulted in cutting-edge AR applications for new electric BMW iX vehicles that use vehicle sensor data and computer vision functionality. Combined, these functions enable AR-enhanced information to be shown on the car’s Central Information Display while navigation is enabled.
Augmented reality-powered Central Information Displays help drivers with vehicle interaction and can improve awareness of surroundings. For example, AR can assist to make navigation whilst driving easier, safer and more accurate by displaying upcoming turning maneuvers and lane recommendations to drivers directly on a vehicle’s Central Information Display.
The front-view camera in the BMW iX automatically sends live footage to the curved touchscreen, where interactive arrows are then overlaid in order to show drivers exactly where they need to go. Plus, thanks to the vehicle’s split-screen functionality, the map still remains visible, providing the bigger navigational picture.
Basemark added that its AR features can also be used to help improve the parking experience in densely packed urban environments. For example, AR can help to guide drivers towards available parking spaces, inform about parking limitations and rates, and augment drivers’ spatial awareness during parking.
“The BMW Group’s augmented reality-powered applications set a new standard for driver experience, comfort, and safety. We are delighted that Basemark’s leading automotive software know-how resulted in AR implementations that fulfilled the concept of the BMW Group and asset requirements with great technical feasibility and high performance.” said Tero Sarkkinen, CEO and Founder of Basemark. He added, “We also collaborated to improve the BMW Group’s asset creation and delivery process, empowering both designers and developers, resulting in reducing time spent on development. The work also included providing support for concept exploration and simulation development of AR concept features.”
Basemark was founded in Helsinki in 2015 and has operations in Finland, Germany and the US. The company’s main offering is its ‘Rocksolid Core’ end-to-end automotive operating system and platform, which covers all vehicle functions for software-defined vehicles.
