Varjo Announces General Availability of ‘Teleport’ 3D Scanning Solution

In Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality News

November 25, 2024 – Varjo, a provider of industrial-grade virtual and mixed reality (VR/MR) hardware and software, has today announced the general availability of ‘Teleport,’ a service that offers ultra high-resolution 3D scanning using just a smartphone.

Starting today, Teleport is available for both professional and individual users for USD $29.99 per month. The commercial launch concludes a closed beta period during which Varjo worked with 2,000 professionals and enterprises to develop and optimize the solution. Beta-testers were able to capture places with just 5–10 minutes of scanning, much faster than the hours or days needed for standard photogrammetry workflows, according to Varjo.

“Today, we are proud to release Teleport, the most visually impressive 3D scanning solution publicly available, and the only one able to bring digital twins directly into virtual reality. This service will change the way professionals work, making it easier than ever to capture, share, and analyze real-world places,” said Patrick Wyatt, Chief Product Officer at Varjo.

Powered by generative models trained on NVIDIA GPUs, Teleport enables the creation of photorealistic digital twins, by synthesizing high-definition 3D scenes out of photos taken on a smartphone. Varjo stated that once a place is captured using Teleport, it can then be viewed on a phone, PC, or experienced in full virtual reality.

The company added that Teleport “radically reduces the time and complexity traditionally associated with digitizing real-world places,” and enables new workflows in fields such as design, remote inspection, construction, and training. On top of these industries, Varjo also noted that 19 out of 20 of the world’s largest defense and aerospace companies are currently utilizing its solutions.

Varjo Announces New Strategic Investors

In addition to announcing Teleport, Varjo has also announced that it has expanded its latest funding round, adding new investors Beyond Capital, Nishikawa Communications and NVIDIA, alongside existing investors.

Varjo stated that with the funding it aims to accelerate the adoption of XR hardware and software in industrial environments by offering solutions that “enhance productivity, creativity, and efficiency.”

The company added that it will harness the latest advancements in AI and machine learning in order to continue the development of products and services that “enable a future where the real and virtual become indistinguishable.”

Commenting on this latest announcement, Timo Toikkanen, Varjo CEO said: “On NVIDIA’s accelerated computing platform, we can push the boundaries of what’s possible in immersive technology, delivering unparalleled experiences for the most demanding industrial users as they bring their workflows into virtual environments.”
