September 10, 2023 – Glartek, a provider of augmented reality (AR) software solutions for industry, has recently announced that it has joined forces with the Research Center for Assistive Information and Communication Solutions (Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS/FhP-AICOS), along with Simoldes and Águas do Porto, in a research project that aims to harness the capabilities of AI and AR to improve shop floor operations.
According to Glartek, the Smart Industrial Maintenance through Augmented Reality project (SINATRA) – aims to enhance safety procedures, audits, as well as the visibility and efficiency of shop floor equipment, such as manometers (devices that measure pressure), through an optimized data display.
The project consists of two major research and development objectives. The first concerns the development of a hybrid AR solution that takes advantage of augmented reality glasses and promotes the interface through a smartphone or tablet to inform and optimize processes – potentially enabling quicker decision-making and heightened productivity.
The second objective aims to develop a set of computer vision modules to be integrated into a mobile application to facilitate the recognition of equipment, allow the automatic reading of digital and analog manometers and, finally, to ensure that the acquired images to validate the field evidence are of sufficient quality. Glartek also noted that the technology that the two companies have developed will allow operators to access AR data using HoloLens, smartphones, or tablets.
Bruno Duarte, CEO of Glartek, said: “Our goal is to simplify access to information to speed up execution. With this technology, we are able to deliver a reliable, fast, and accurate display of data, that can make a real difference in the industry.”
Maria Vasconcelos, Project Manager at FhP-AICOS, emphasized the significance of the joint effort, stating: “With the SINATRA project, we aim to streamline and facilitate industrial preventive and corrective processes. Our combined expertise in technical and scientific domains will enable us to deliver an innovative technology that will support Industry 4.0.”
