Walmart launches first AR extension for its ‘Walmart Discovered’ Roblox experience

June 28, 2024 – Walmart has this week announced the launch of its first-ever augmented reality (AR) extension for its Roblox experience, Walmart Discovered. The launch builds on an earlier test in April involving a real-world commerce integration within Walmart Discovered on Roblox. The new AR extension, developed in collaboration with Sawhorse using Niantic’s 8th Wall platform, aims to provide an immersive shopping experience for customers on the platform. 

The AR extension offers several interactive elements, including:

• Uncovering a free virtual item each month, unlocked with the purchase of a Roblox gift card from Walmart.
• Accessing a curated selection of top-rated avatar items and new experiences created by the Roblox community.
• Completing monthly quests powered by Flaunt to earn limited-edition user-generated content (UGC).
• Trying on and purchasing avatar items directly within the AR experience.

Walmart stated that customers will be able to access the AR experience from in-store displays, a dedicated landing page on Walmart’s website, and other promotional tactics. Featuring six indie experiences and games built by Roblox creators, Walmart Discovered offers users a glimpse into these experiences with the option to visit them on Roblox.

To support the launch, Walmart partnered with Flaunt, a Roblox loyalty platform, to power monthly quests that connect the AR experience with the on-platform Roblox experience. Completing these quests then unlocks free UGC items for customers, who can also receive a different free virtual item each month with the purchase of a Roblox gift card.

In a LinkedIn post, Justin Breton, Walmart’s Director of Brand Experiences & Strategic Partnerships, stated: “It’s important for us to continue identifying new, innovative ways to deepen our relationship with our Roblox community. That’s why, today, we’re launching the Walmart Discovered AR Experience, the first-ever immersive AR experience that allows customers to step inside Walmart Discovered in the real-world.”
