April 24, 2024 – SenseGlove, a developer of force and haptic feedback gloves, has recently announced worldwide shipping of its SenseGlove Nova 2 haptic gloves.
What are the SenseGlove Nova 2 haptic gloves?
According to SenseGlove, the Nova 2 is the first and only pair of wireless VR gloves on the market that feature feedback on the palm of the hand. The new gloves combine three advanced haptic feedback technologies in a wireless compact design: active contact feedback to feel palm impacts and grasping sensations; force-feedback for feeling the size and stiffness of virtual objects; and vibrotactile feedback to feel cues and basic textures.
As a result, the glove doesn’t just restrict finger movements around virtual objects; it encompasses the whole palm, allowing users to feel a range of interactions, from breaking an egg to shaking hands.
Nova 2 is well suited to simulating feedback sensations, from power tools used in VR training (such as drills, saws and grinders, hammers, pliers), to rehabilitation tools or any other dynamic objects that come in contact with the palm.
SenseGlove Nova 2 for collaborative haptic experiences
Nova 2 also introduces a new level of engagement in social and multiplayer scenarios. With the glove, users can high-five a colleague across the globe and feel a feedback response, or shake hands with a business partner, sensing their grip in return, according to SenseGlove.
What are the key features of SenseGlove Nova 2?
Active Contact Feedback – The active haptic strap on the Nova 2 glove applies varying pressure to the user’s palm, creating an immersive experience during interactions with virtual objects;
Force-Feedback – Nova 2 incorporates four magnetic friction brakes dedicated to each finger, emulating the feeling of size and stiffness by restricting the finger’s movement;
Vibrotactile Feedback – An array of 4 haptic motors renders realistic button clicks, vibrations, basic textures and impact simulations for immersive virtual reality training. This even allows for the sensation of feeling water dripping on your hand;
Finger Tracking – Combining sensor-based finger tracking with advanced algorithms, Nova 2 captures thumb, index, middle, and ring finger movements, alongside thumb abduction and adduction, and measures these movements by tracking cable extension. Compared to the Nova 1 the Nova 2 has improved finger tracking with 2 degrees of freedom for the index finger.
“We’re thrilled to share that the new SenseGlove is already reaching our amazing clients, and it comes with three types of haptic feedback for enhanced VR interactions,” said SenseGlove CEO Frank Goovaerts. “Our clients shared their desire to feel things on their palms, just like with real objects. It took us many engineering hours, but with Nova 2, we made it happen while keeping the gloves wireless and easy to use.”
How much does the SenseGlove Nova 2 cost?
The SenseGlove Nova 2 costs EUR €5,999 and is now shipping worldwide. SenseGlove noted that bulk order discounts are available, and just like the company’s original Nova glove, Nova 2 is available in three sizes and comes with detachable soft gloves for convenient washing.
