March 25, 2025 – Distance Technologies, a developer of glasses-free extended reality (XR) technology designed for the automotive, aerospace and defense markets, has recently announced a new collaboration with the Patria-led eALLIANCE programme and Patria, a European defence and technology company, to upgrade Patria’s 6×6 vehicles to give both driver and passengers the ability to “see in the dark.”
According to Distance, the collaboration will see Patria and Distance create a unique solution designed for use in low-visibility battlefield environments such as darkness or smoke. Utilizing Distance’s patented XR light field and digital optics technology, the solution will aim to enhance situational awareness by enabling a constant stream of real-time 3D tactical information, terrain data and more.
This information will be fused with military AI data streams and completely viewable through the windshield without additional hardware or optics, the company stated. Distance highlighted that this is all achieved without revealing the vehicle’s position due to light leakage.
The solution also aims to eliminate the need for drivers and vehicle commanders to look down, through a separate screen, or wear a weighty headset or glasses, and will instead allow operators to look directly through the windshield and safely see in darkness or low-visibility environments, while simultaneously benefiting from enhanced tactical awareness.

The new collaboration between Patria and Distance is achieved through Patria’s eALLIANCE programme, which is funded by Business Finland as a means to amplify and supercharge Finnish civil and defence sector companies through the disruptive digital-physical fusion of mechanical capabilities with data sharing.
“Through our patented technology, we are able to give drivers ‘super-sensing’ abilities using the Distance glasses-free mixed reality solution,” said Urho Konttori, CEO and co-founder of Distance Technologies. “Creating XR HUDs that visualize mission-critical information on the windshield for unprecedented speed, confidence and decision-making ability on the battlefields of the future is an important validation of Distance’s ability to disrupt the land vehicle defence sector.”
